It 'can', but it doesn't have to. It all depends on how or with what you finish the grip. On the few of these I've done (for others so far, I personally like cork), I've used Tru Oil to finish the grip.

The finish I use is the same stuff I put on the rod shafts, a glossy two part epoxy. The grip is not slippery in the hand.
